The Kite Runner - The Final Essay- Friendship Vs Betrayal Friendship is a two way street and if the definition of friendship is not the same between the two people then it results in betrayal â€Å"But before you sacrifice yourself for him, think about this: Would he do the same for you?† (77). In The Kite Runner, a story written by Khaled Hosseini, which follows the two â€Å"friends† Amir and Hassan , who grew up together in Kabul, Afghanistan. Both had differed from each other, maybe even opposites, Amir was son of a rich merchant while Hassan was raised by a servant. Amir was a Sunni Muslim while Hassan was a Shia Muslim but despite their differences they had grown up together and are â€Å"friends†. Also, Hassan not only trusts Amir and is lo yal to him but is willing to go to any lengths to protect Amir because they are friends and that is what friendship means to Hassan. /. Amir has a different approach towards his and Hassan’s friendship unlike Hassan, Amir does not appreciate his friendship with Hassan and is willing to betray him countless times for his desires unlike, Hassan who is the opposite and is willing to do anything to be kind and loyal to Amir. Amir’s first act of betrayal on Hassan had not been significant but as the plot continues Amir’s betrayals become worse and worse. The first example of Amir’s betrayal towards Hassan is when he lets Hassan take all the blame for Amir’s ideas â€Å"I talked Hassan into firing walnuts with his slingshot...But he never told on me. Never told that the mirror, like shooting walnuts at the neighbors dog, was always my idea.† (4).
